I saw an ad for the
Kindle today. You know that little gadget that allows you to "
eread" books? Well, I have a problem with it. While I do love me some technology, there is something I love even a little bit more.
Books.
There is something so personal about a book. The cover, the pages, the feel of it. I love books...even when they are only "new to me." And on those rare occasions when I do get a truly new book from the bookstore? I stroke and caress it. I stare at it lovingly before I turn the first page. I have even been known to hug a new book tightly to my chest, giddy with the anticipation of reading it.
Do I sound like a book pervert? I swear I am not.
Give me a new folder, binder, notebook...I am the same way. The newness...the possibilities. Is it any surprise I am a teacher?
But the Kindle? A flat, dull screen? Small and impersonal? No new-book smell? It just can't be as rewarding as reading a book.
When I finish an especially good book, there is nothing better than closing the book with a satisfying thud...simply holding it in my arms while I reflect on what I've read. You just can't get that same feeling by pushing an off button and staring at a blank screen.
So given the choice of a book or a Kindle?

I'll choose book every time.
