Book Dork

I saw an ad for the Kindle today. You know that little gadget that allows you to "eread" books? Well, I have a problem with it. While I do love me some technology, there is something I love even a little bit more.

Books.

There is something so personal about a book. The cover, the pages, the feel of it. I love books...even when they are only "new to me." And on those rare occasions when I do get a truly new book from the bookstore? I stroke and caress it. I stare at it lovingly before I turn the first page. I have even been known to hug a new book tightly to my chest, giddy with the anticipation of reading it.

Do I sound like a book pervert? I swear I am not.

Give me a new folder, binder, notebook...I am the same way. The newness...the possibilities. Is it any surprise I am a teacher?

But the Kindle? A flat, dull screen? Small and impersonal? No new-book smell? It just can't be as rewarding as reading a book.

When I finish an especially good book, there is nothing better than closing the book with a satisfying thud...simply holding it in my arms while I reflect on what I've read. You just can't get that same feeling by pushing an off button and staring at a blank screen.

So given the choice of a book or a Kindle?

I'll choose book every time.

Thank you, Shannon! I am so glad I am not the only one!

Me, too. There's just something tactile that I must have to enjoy a book. I need the full five senses thing going on

I agree with you 100% - I love digging through my old boxes of books and finding one I haven't read in ages. The feel of the pages, the smell of the paper - nothing beats it!

Amen, sister. You hit the nail on the head. There's nothing like a book. Period.

I cannot imagine reading a book off of a computer screen. I am a book lover through and through and they must be have binding, and paper, and curl up with me anywhere.

Ok, I will be the weird one who would rather have the Kindle. And I think my Hubby would rather me have a Kindle too because of all the stacks of books I have now.
Maybe someday I will save up enough money for one....those things are WAY too expensive!

The geek in me wants a Kindle. Not that I think I'll ever actually acquire one.
But I do love a new book. Or a book from you. Or a book from the library if it's been on my List for a while. Loving Harvesting the Heart, although it doesn't have the twists Picoult usually has, so I keep waiting for some legal drama to kick in. If only I had more time to read!

I'm so with ya. I like the ring of coffee stain on my REAL book. Plus, I'd prolly drop the Kindle in the tub and kill myself. Can't you see it? "Well kids, you mom died reading a good book".

Devil's advocate time: You know, I bet there are times I'd like a Kindle -- like when I go on a week's vacation with a half-dozen books but am fearful of not liking some, or running out, or lugging hardcovers. I know I'd still want the books themselves if I liked them, but I think I'd like to tote that little thing around and try it out. But it is because I love books, not because I don't.

I believe there is room in this world for both! We purchased a Kindle when they first came out. We love it. When you go on vacation you take the Kindle rather than several books. My husband used it when he was in the hospital. You download whatever you want when you want. The first thing we downloaded was a bible for 99 cents. My son just went away to college and he took it with him. We still buy real books too!

How funny--my blog post today was also about being a book nerd! And I totally agree with you--I am completely anti Kindle!

i would totally choose the book. I hate reading anything longer than a couple pages online. I prefer printing.

I like books. I like to have a couple in each room where I might sit to read. If I had a Kindle, I would constantly be looking for it ! A stack of books in each room gives me options. Plus, how do you turn down a corner of a Kindle?

We are not alone in our love and admiration for books... great blog entry!

Make it a great day!

I agree. While there are some aspects of the Kindle that I like and that appeal to my uncluttered, efficient lifestyle, there's nothing truly like a book. I'm crazy about that new book smell!! They need to make a perfume out of it. ;)

OH I completely agree! I love the smell and feel of a new book, and I to hug it to my chest when no one is looking ;)! The only thing I can see the Kindle for is being convenient in a commuting situation or traveling. But otherwise nothing beats turning each page and being the first person to crease the binding! I am the same with notebooks, folders, post-it packs, my fiance has to drag me out of these isles and I'm not allowed in Staples by myself any longer! HAHA!

I totally agree too! I have no desire for a Kindle! I love holding my books and I screen just won't do it for me!

Amen! Give me a book anyday.

Yuper! I'm a book lover ... I even have a hard time ordering things of the internet ... I love to look through catalogs etc. There's just something about words on a page, the glossy pictures, not having a glare and the sound the paper makes when you turn the page.

I'm a book junkie....Love the smell of a new book(s).

I do think the Kindle is cool... and I think it'd be great to travel with. So if someone were to give me a Kindle, I sure wouldn't turn it down!

But I love my books. Especially NEW books. I'm kind of a book snob that way... I'd rather buy a new book than borrow one from the library!

I love books too. And I have so many in my house that I'll probably have to build on soon.

Thumbs DOWN to the Kindle...give me paper!!

I don't think my eyes would like reading from a Kindle for too awful long, but I'm not completely adverse to it. That being said, I love books, and the library is my favorite room in our house. The public library is my favorite local place to take the kids. Books are exciting!

I totally agree with you on this....as I do many other things!

Here, here! My name is Becky and I TOO am a book dork. Don't even get me started on my love for the library. :)

I'm like you... I LOVE a good book. The anticipation of opening it up to enter a new world or life, the beauty of being the first to crack it up... or the vintage of one that has been read over and over again. I love the smell of them. I love everything about a book.

But I also love to read. So I could deal with a Kindle if someone got me one ;)

You know I had this conversation with someone the other day. I want the book, hands down! Give me a book anyday, I love the cover, sometimes that is what sells me on a book. Where's the cover on a kindle.I like having them in a bookcase to look at and if they are new, I like turning the pages and rubbing the softness of the pages that have not been touched by no one by me.Yea weird I know but I would rather have the book, and the newspaper too. My husband likes reading the paper online. Not me I like buying the paper and reading everything in it.You can't get everything online. I am so glad there are others that agree with me.

I'm so with you! I love new notebooks/books/etc......I must be a dork too!
And, I'm a total sucker for anything Crayola.....Oh my....

However, I do still find the whole Kindle thing intriging.....

Preach it!

I have to say, I so agree with you on this one. My hubby is trying desperately to get me interested in a Kindle - wanting me to "research" them - I just can't get excited about it. I LOVE a good book and reading on a "computer" type thing just doesn't sound enticing to me.

I have a love affair with Amazon. I read about good books, choose them on the site, wait for them to arrive. I love to hold a book and look at the cover art. I love the feeling, the smell. It would have to be book!

I just got Hunger Games in the mail yesterday, I've heard good things. I'll let you know.
