I spent the night in the emergency room and all I got were these lousy bruises

The first week of my summer vacation did not exactly start as planned. Sunday night I started having major pain in my lower abdomen. It felt as though my uterus was falling out of my body while at the same time, someone was shoving a pipe up my rectum.

Was that too much information?

It brought me to my knees and I commenced to writhing on the floor in a sweaty, sobbing heap of misery. We called my mom, she got in the car, and started the 30 minute drive. I decided I couldn't wait 30 minutes and had my husband's cousin come sit at the house with the sleeping children while my hubby drove me to the ER.

We arrived at the ER at 10:30 Sunday night. We had a lovely nurse who informed me I had "small vein syndrome." She messed and messed and declared my veins too small to work with. (I found it ironic that the ONLY small thing on my body is my veins. Hmpf.) After 2 failed attempts at starting an IV, another nurse came in and finally got one started.

Hello, morphine.

When I finally calmed down, the nice doctor came in and pushed on my abdomen, asking if it hurt. I am pretty sure when I grunted, yelled, and pushed his arm away, he knew the answer.

After an x-ray, regular CT scan, downing 3 huge bottles of contrasting liquid, another CT scan, and multiple trips to the restroom, I was finally dismissed at 5:30 a.m. with the diagnosis of a ruptured ovarian cyst.

I didn't get much sleep, obviously. But at least I had a hospital bed/cart. My poor hubby sat on a chair with his head against a metal filing cabinet for the 7 hour visit. Luckily we were able to get home and get in a couple hours of sleep before the kids woke up.

I am still sore and have such a bloated, heavy, full stomach. Cole was so sweet when he first woke up, announcing he would do everything for me today. The second thing I asked him to do for me?

"Why do I have to do everything around here?!"

Back to reality. I have a feeling it's going to be a l-o-n-g summer.

So...are you fixed...or do they do something else for you? Besides the bruises. And night of no sleep.

You surely do know how to start your summer with a bang!

Been there! Done that! Mine ruptured at work. Your uterus is going to let you know exactly where it is for a few days. The fluid that erupts causes alot of swelling and inflamation. Take your tylenol and ibuprofen on time and get some rest (I know...hard to do). Your body will heal itself. And if you remember which side you felt the pain on, you'll at least know with ovary is evil! Mine is my right...if I ever have to have one removed, I'm voting it off my reproductive island. *hugs*

I missed something. What caused the bruises? My history degree is awesome, but it doesn't allow me to diagnose things like this. Glad you're better - I'll be posting more from summer school - stay tuned!

And atleast you're not having to write sub plans while recuperating!

Oh my! Another reason why being a woman is SO fun. Seriously, do we get ANY breaks?? (PMS, giving birth, ovaries, etc., etc.) :)

Cracking up at "do I have to do everything around here?" So funny!

Glad that you are doing OK although now I feel really guilty asking about your blog design. As if you didn't have anything more pressing on your mind. I guess that I didn't read this early enough in the day. Thanks for the response despite all of this :)

When you're a mom, there's no such thing as too much information! Feel better soon! I pray that your summer will be long on the joy found in sunshine, the peace found in no school work, and the awesomeness of your children who make the hands move on the clock!

You couldn't have described that better. I know how you feel, I have had that happen about five times now and it is awful. I could not have described it better.

Oh no....that totally sucks!!!! I blame the kids (your students, that is) for causing ANY MENTAL OR PHYSICAL HEALTH PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. I certainly blame mine for all my issues. I hope you feel better soon.

At least your summer can only get better from here.

So sorry that you had to start your summer this way -- I know you hate to be out of commission. And listen, from one small-vein-person to another, I feel your pain. It all depends on the skill and patience of the person with the needle -- I've had to go back three times to get blood at one doctor's office and at another it's as quick and painless as anything. We're thinking of you!

OH sister, been there, done that got the tshirt. I am glad you are feeling better.

My doctor put me on the pill to keep ovarian cysts at bay after I had surgery at age 16 for them.

Merrie said...

Yikes! I'm relieved to know you'll be okay, but take care of yourself. Thank goodness you can be home and not running around. Or at least, that's the idea, right?
Take care!!

Deanna said...

I know what else I wanted to say yesterday. If you ever have another one happen and can get into to your obgyn, they can diagnose a ruptured ovarian cyst with a sonogram.

Oh...one more suggestion...for the next few days - stool softeners, cause every.thing.hurts. down there due to the inflamation.

Oh no....I sure hope you are feeling lots better now. That sucks! That Cole story sure was funny though.... ;)

Lula! said...

Bless your heart.

Next time, spend many, many hours and drive to our hospital...Dr. Litton will take care of you in fine fashion.

OK, it's a nice thought at least. Are you feeling better?

Finding Normal said...

Well crap. I leave for a few days, and you have to go and rupture something?!?! Hope you're feeling better now. Let me know if you want to ship your kids over here Thursday or Friday! And small veins? Suck. Mine roll all over, and I always warn them that they roll. Then the person digging the crap out of my arm will act all indignant, like they can't BELIEVE they can't get a vein. Shove off bitch.

Lindsay said...

Feeling your pain, sista. I've had ovarian cysts before, and while I've never had one burst like that, I've had them create lots o' pain and it isn't fun at all.

Also, I hate needles. You can thank the blood bank for a local hospital for never getting any of my A positive again. Second time I donated they missed my vein and scraped up my arm. Hurt so bad I could've puked.

Oh, that's funny!! (his comment, not your pain, of course, haha) Glad you made it through; I've heard that can be pretty rough!
