Sunday Morning on the Farm

Sundays are the best day of the week around here. The kids and I can stay in jammies all day if we please. The husband is happy to be able to work on the farm all day long, regardless of how cold it is...14 degrees today to be exact. And what better way to spend such a gorgeous winter day than spreading manure...

As soon as Cole heard what the guys would be doing today, he quickly started spreading his own manure. Little did he know he would soon get to help with the real thing. Most of the cattle on this farm are contained...meaning they stay in the barn area rather than graze in a field. What does this mean? It means a lot of poop is what it means.
Every few weeks or so, the barns need cleaned out. Usually that requires one of these...

and one of these.
Then the real fun begins.

And when you're done, you have a steaming pile of sh!t. Literally.

This goes onto the fields for fertilizer. And this is where I thank my lucky stars that it is 14 degrees. Frozen poop smells much less worse than non-frozen poop.

Those of us not spreading manure stay warm in trucks.

And still others stay home and get fancy.

And when all the manure has been spread, that's when the sh!t really hits the fan. Because Mommy comes back to pick you up. And you haven't had near enough time with the manure. Or the tractor. Or the skid loader. And you're mad. You're really, really mad.

But then Mommy brings you in for hot cocoa and cookies. And you thaw out and realize Mommy isn't so bad after all. She might not compare with cow manure, but she'll do. For now.

Thank the Lord for farmers like your husband, because I could NOT do that. My in-laws live in rural western Ohio, and it's tough to breathe out there when we visit in the fall.

It definitely looks like you have someone dying to follow in his father's footsteps, and that's too precious for words :) He was born to be a farmer!

That was quite possibly the cutest post you've ever written. I'm with Lindsay--could.NOT.do.it. But you knew that!
And Claire? Needs to come to town and live with me! I bet she would be fun to Target with!
Boy, you're up late!

I love your blog and your descriptions. You have a beautiful family..Sorry, Poop isn't my thing either. I can hear the cows from a distance on a summer morning but I cant smell them...thank goodness!

Although, my sister used to tell me she loved the smell of cow poo in the morning..yuk!

Beautiful sunrise pic, and stinking manure pics. Farm Boy is definitely destined to follow in his daddy's footsteps. Little Miss is destined to give you LOTS of laundry lol. Have a great week.

Cool pics! I agree poop smells much less worse this time of year. Cow poop is one of my favorite farm smells. Pig and turkey, not so good. Yeah, I'm weird, but I grew up on a farm, and that's life :)

Awww...thanks for the story. Cole will appreciate that recap when he's older.

I like to know how things work on the farm so I really enjoyed this. I also like cows so thanks for the cow pics too.

And as always love to see pics of the kids...
