You say tomato, I say, um...tomato

One thing I did find interesting in my class this week was talking to other people from other areas of the state, and in a couple of cases, from different states. I love hearing how people speak differently, especially when someone uses another name for an object. For example, one man's truck is another man's pickup. You might call a cemetary a graveyard. I think often times location and generation have a lot to do with our words...and sometimes it's just personal preference.

Since ya'll (see, there's one right there!) are from all over the country, I'd love to hear your word choices for these objects. So, look at each picture and leave a comment with your name for the object. I am anxious to hear your responses. I'd also love to hear from people outside of the U.S. (Karen, that'd be you.)

And if no one participates, I will cry. Please don't make me cry on my summer vacation.

1. It's all coke. Then you must specify what kind. If all else fails...it's a soda.
2. Highway
3. Dinner
4. Shopping cart
5. Bathroom
6. sofa or couch. I use both terms.
7. tennis shoes
8. canteloupe
9. produce department of a grocery store.

Re the last one - when my hubby says he's going to the grocery - he says he's going shopping. To me, shopping is the mall. Or something like that. Grocery shopping - the terms must go together.

Aren't you cute....what an interesting assignment. I had to scroll down fast so I wasn't influenced by anyone else's answers...here goes:

2. highway
3. dinner
4. buggy
5. bathroom (I only say restroom when I'm trying to impress someone)
6. couch

Yay! Thanks for playing, ladies. I love games! It seems that location definitely plays into what we say.
I "should" say pop based on location, but for some reason my dad starting calling it soda and it just stuck. It cracks me up though to think of people just asking for Coke...what if you want a Sprite or Big Red. Do you make 2 requests? "I want a coke." "What kind?" "Um, I think I'll have Dr. Pepper." That's a lot of work!
Around here, dinner is lunch so supper is supper. Unless we go out...then we always go out to dinner, not out to supper.
And I wish I lived in the south for a minute to call a cart a buggy. A buggy around here is the slow-moving vehicle full of Amish. LOL See, I can say that because I KNOW they aren't reading this.
The only sneakers around these parts are the kids trying to cover up a mess they have made. Mrs. Parks...I agree. That's exactly how we say it.
A sofa sounds so much fancier than a couch. I guess couch is a fitting term for ours. Not so fancy.
Thanks for playing!

I've lived in several states, so my vocabulary is now a mix, but some favorite words from my childhood in Iowa are:
6. Davenport. I didn't see that one above, but maybe I missed it. My mom always called the couch a davenport. She said there was a davenport factory in Davenport, Iowa. Hence the name. At least that was her story, and she was sticking to it. On those 1970's plastic covers.
7. Tennies. We bought them as Tennis Shoes, but they were only called that for the first week we owned them. Then they were tennies. After a season of detasseling, they were 'garbage', but never 'trash'.
8. Muskmelon. I didn't know there was another word for it until I was old enough to be embarrassed by calling cantaloupe muskmelon.

Thanks for the memories!

Oooh this is fun!

1 - crap (LOL okie, I have to confess, we're a Dr. Pepper family so neither of these are appealing to me and my choice would end up being sweet tea over "coke" - the brown bubbling product in THOSE cans)
2 - Highway - although it appears to be in a very FLAT area.
3 - Dinner - although we used to say SUPPER - yet my oldest had problems saying it and it always sounded 'dirty' when he'd try (he does have a speech disorder so that's to be expected) so we changed it to dinner.
4 - buggy
5 - potty
6 - couch
7 - tennis shoe
8 - yummy goodness otherwise known as 'orange melon' in this house
9 - vitamin aisle or are you looking for the whole building....market?
